Salsa is the Spanish word for "sauce," and Salsa music and dance do their best to deliver the hot and spicy flavour!

Salsa is a very popular club dance that originated in New York in the 1970's. It is heavily influenced by Cuban Son, Cha-cha-cha, Mambo and other dance forms. It can be danced to a variety of different rhythms, so it works with a large portion of current popular music.

The dance is still evolving, and several distinct styles have arisen in different geographical areas such as the Columbian, Cuban (also known as Miami and Casino Rueda), Los Angeles and New York styles. There is room for improvisation and the borrowing of moves from other dance styles, giving a dancer the chance to make the dance their own.

Salsa is the national music and dance of Puerto Rico.
